72 Angels (Shem HaMephorash) (七十二天使)
שם המפורש — The Seventy-Two Names, and the Angels of a Birth
Overview
The Shem HaMephorash (שם המפורש, 'the explicit Name') is the Kabbalistic 72-fold Name of God, and from it the tradition derives 72 angels — a complete angelic alphabet of the divine. Each angel governs a 5° arc of the zodiac, so that the whole circle of 360° is divided among the 72 in order, beginning with Vehuiah at the spring equinox. From a person's birth the practical Kabbalah of Ambelain and Kabaleb draws three guardian angels: one from the Sun's position (the incarnation or guardian angel), one finer angel of the heart, and one of the intellect from the hour of birth.
Origin & history
The 72 names come from a remarkable feature of the Torah: Exodus 14:19, 14:20 and 14:21 — the verses describing the parting of the Red Sea — each contain exactly 72 Hebrew letters. Writing the first verse forward, the second reversed, and the third forward, one above another, yields 72 columns of three letters: the 72 three-letter roots of the Name. Suffixing each with a divine ending (-יah or -אl) gives the 72 angelic names, from Vehuiah to Mumiah. The system was elaborated by Rabbinic and Christian-Cabalist authors (Athanasius Kircher, later Éliphas Lévi and Ambelain), and the birth-angel method popularised in the twentieth century by Kabaleb and by Terah Cox.
The 72 angels are arranged in nine choirs of eight — Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominions, Powers, Virtues, Principalities, Archangels and Angels — each choir ruled by one of the great archangels (Metatron, Raziel, Tzaphkiel, Tzadkiel, Camael, Raphael, Haniel, Michael, Gabriel) and answering to a Sephirah on the Tree of Life. Laid around the zodiac, angel 1 (Vehuiah) takes 0°–5° of Aries at the vernal equinox and the rest follow in 5° steps. Because the count is anchored to the equinox, the popular fixed-date tables (Vehuiah = 21–25 March) only approximate it and drift year to year — the true angel is read from the Sun's actual position.
How it works
Give a birth date (and, for the finer two angels, a time). The engine computes the Sun's tropical longitude on the shared Meeus ephemeris and takes the INCARNATION (physical / guardian) angel as the 5° arc the Sun occupies — floor(λ☉/5)+1 — with its virtue, choir, ruling archangel, Sephirah and planet. With a birth time it adds the HEART (emotional) angel, found by subdividing that 5° arc into 72 again, and the INTELLECT (mental) angel, found from the 20-minute slice of the day (72 × 20 minutes = 24 hours) counting from local midnight. Only the earthly clock and the Sun are needed; without a time the two finer angels are omitted.
Good for
- Your Incarnation (guardian) angel from the Sun's 5° arc
- Its virtue, choir, ruling archangel and Sephirah
- The Heart (emotional) angel — a finer subdivision (needs a birth time)
- The Intellect (mental) angel from the hour of birth
- The 72 names and their Exodus 14:19–21 derivation
- A Kabbalistic angelology to complement the gematria systems
Use cases
Your Guardian Angel
Send a birth date and get the incarnation angel — the 5° solar arc's angel — with its name, virtue, choir and archangel.
The Three Angels
Add a birth time and receive all three — incarnation, heart and intellect — the classical Kabaleb / Ambelain trio.
The Choirs & Archangels
See which of the nine choirs your angel belongs to and the archangel and Sephirah that govern it, tying the angel to the Tree of Life.
Equinox-True, Not Table-Approximate
The angel is read from the Sun's real longitude, so it is correct across the equinox drift the popular fixed-date tables miss.
Key terms
- Shem HaMephorash (שם המפורש)
- The 'explicit Name' of God, the 72-fold Name from which the 72 angels are derived via Exodus 14:19–21.
- Incarnation angel
- The physical or guardian angel, taken from the 5° arc of the zodiac the Sun occupied at birth (floor of the Sun's longitude over 5, plus one).
- Heart & Intellect angels
- The two finer angels of the Kabaleb method — the heart from the 5° arc subdivided into 72, the intellect from the 20-minute slice of the birth day.
- The nine choirs
- The 72 angels in nine groups of eight — Seraphim through Angels — each ruled by an archangel and a Sephirah on the Tree of Life.
- Vehuiah
- Angel 1, governing 0°–5° Aries at the vernal equinox — the anchor of the 72-fold zodiacal wheel; virtue of will and new beginnings.
API
The askTIAN 72 Angels endpoint draws a person's guardian angels of the Shem HaMephorash from their birth. It computes the Sun's tropical longitude on the shared Meeus ephemeris and returns the INCARNATION (physical) angel — the 5° solar arc's angel by floor(λ☉/5)+1, read from the true Sun position rather than the drifting fixed-date tables — with its Hebrew name, virtue, choir, ruling archangel, Sephirah, planet and the arc it governs. With a birth time it also returns the HEART (emotional) angel (the arc subdivided ×72) and the INTELLECT (mental) angel (the 20-minute slice of the day from local midnight); without a time these are omitted. Deterministic and gold-locked (14 May → #11 Lauviah, 09:30 → #29 Reiyel). A best-effort LLM reading is returned in parsable sections (set interpretation:false for structured data only). Honest rails: the 72 angels tile the tropical zodiac from the equinox; the intellect angel uses the midnight-origin convention (Kabaleb's sunrise variant differs) and the heart subdivision is the least-standardized part — both disclosed. A symbolic Kabbalistic tradition for reflection, not a validated predictor, and not medical, legal or financial advice.
