A Symbolic Image for Every Degree of the Zodiac

Overview

The Sabian Symbols are a set of 360 symbolic images, one for every single degree of the zodiac — Aries 1 through Pisces 30. They were received in a single remarkable sitting in San Diego in 1925, when the astrologer Marc Edmund Jones shuffled 360 cards each bearing a zodiacal degree and the clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler intuitively ‘saw’ a picture for each one. Dane Rudhyar later reinterpreted the whole set as a cyclic ‘mandala’ of unfoldment. In a chart, every planet and angle falls in exactly one degree, and that degree’s Sabian Symbol — an image like ‘A clear mountain stream’ or ‘Two lovers strolling through a secluded walk’ — gives that placement a living picture to meditate on, quite different from the abstract keywords of ordinary astrology. askTIAN maps each of a chart’s points to its Sabian degree and returns the image plus Rudhyar’s structural position in the 360-degree cycle.

Origin & history

Marc Edmund Jones (1888–1980), a founder of modern American astrology, sought a fresh symbolic vocabulary free of older, borrowed degree-symbol systems. On a day in 1925 in Balboa Park, San Diego, he worked with the psychic Elsie Wheeler, who was severely disabled and, Jones felt, unusually attuned; the 360 images came through in one concentrated session. Jones published the definitive set in ‘The Sabian Symbols in Astrology’ (1953). Dane Rudhyar’s ‘An Astrological Mandala’ (1973) rephrased the images, added a one-line keynote to each, and arranged the 360 into a structured cycle of acts and scenes.

askTIAN implements the deterministic core exactly and sources the images carefully. The degree-assignment rule is the crux: the ‘Nth degree’ symbol covers the arc from (N−1)°00′ to (N−1)°59′, so the Sabian number within a sign is floor(degrees-in-sign) + 1 — NOT a ceiling. That means 0°00′ Aries takes the first symbol, 29°59′ the thirtieth, and a planet on an exact whole degree (8°00′ Leo) takes the same symbol as just past it (8°10′ Leo = Leo 9); the naive ‘round up’ reading that shifts exact degrees by one is a common error the engine avoids. The 360 image titles are the Marc Edmund Jones canon and are gold-locked in the test suite (Aries 1 = ‘A woman has risen out of the ocean, a seal is embracing her’; Taurus 1 = ‘A clear mountain stream’; Leo 9 = ‘Glass blowers shape beautiful vases…’). Longitudes are tropical, from askTIAN’s shared ephemeris; Rudhyar’s mandala structure (hemicycle, act, scene, five-fold sequence) is computed arithmetically from the degree number.

How it works

From birth date, time and place the engine computes each body’s tropical ecliptic longitude and maps it to its Sabian degree by floor(longitude) + 1, returning the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and the North Node — plus the Ascendant and Midheaven when a birth time and place are given. Each point comes with its image text, its sign and degree, and its place in Rudhyar’s cycle: the hemicycle (Individualization for Aries–Virgo, Collectivization for Libra–Pisces), the 90° act (Differentiation, Stabilization, Group-Integration, Capitalization), the 15° scene (1–24) and the five-fold sequence (1–72). The symbol depends only on the tropical degree — never on house, sign rulership or aspect. Without a birth time the fast-moving Moon and the angles lose precision, so the angles are omitted and the slower planets carry the reading.

The degree rule is floor(longitude) + 1 — the correct convention that keeps an exact whole degree (8°00′ Leo) on the same symbol as just past it (Leo 9), avoiding the common round-up off-by-one. Longitudes are tropical, from askTIAN’s shared Meeus ephemeris. Honesty rails note that the symbol is degree-only (independent of house/rulership), that Rudhyar’s keynotes differ in wording from these Jones titles, and that the Moon and angles need an accurate birth time. A best-effort LLM reading is returned in parsable sections; set interpretation:false for structured data only.
