In Southeast Asia, premium mobile numbers with auspicious digit combinations are sold by telcos and traded on secondary markets for significant premiums. Origin & history

Phone number feng shui is a modern extension of the classical I Ching numerology tradition, adapted for the digital age. As mobile phones became ubiquitous in the 1990s–2000s, feng shui practitioners began applying the same 8-star pair analysis used for house and car plate numbers to mobile numbers, recognising that the number you use daily carries energetic significance.

Telcos in Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and China began offering premium number selection services in the early 2000s. Numbers containing repeated 8s (e.g. 0188-888-8888) command significant premiums. Business owners in particular invest in auspicious phone numbers as a form of feng shui for their business communications.

How it works

The API strips the country code and all non-digit characters from the phone number, groups the remaining digits into consecutive pairs, and maps each pair to one of the eight I Ching stars. The dominant star type and overall rating are computed from the pair distribution. An LLM synthesises a personalised interpretation covering communication luck, business prospects, relationship energy, and overall fortune.
