Overview

Human Design is a modern synthesis that maps your energetic blueprint from the exact moment of birth. It combines the I Ching's 64 hexagrams, the chakra system, the Kabbalist Tree of Life, and Western astrology into a single 'bodygraph' of nine centres, 36 channels, and 64 gates. From the positions of the planets at birth — and again at the 'design' moment 88° of solar arc earlier — it derives your Type, Strategy, Authority, and Profile: a practical guide to how you are designed to make decisions and engage with the world.

Origin & history

Human Design was introduced by Alan Robert Krakower, known as Ra Uru Hu, who reported receiving the system in 1987. It draws together four traditions — the Chinese I Ching, the Hindu-Brahmin chakra system, the Kabbalist Tree of Life, and the Western zodiac — and overlays them on a precise astronomical calculation, making it one of the most distinctive syncretic systems of the modern era.

Since 1987, Human Design has grown from a niche teaching into a global movement, taught through schools, software, and a large community of analysts. Its appeal lies in turning a complex chart into a few actionable keys — your Type and Strategy — that people use for decision-making, relationships, parenting, and work. Its emphasis on experimenting with one's Strategy and Authority, rather than believing on faith, helped it spread widely in the self-development world.

How it works

Two charts are calculated: the Personality (conscious) chart for the moment of birth, and the Design (unconscious) chart for the moment ~88 days earlier when the Sun was exactly 88° of arc behind its birth position. For each, the positions of 13 bodies (Sun, Earth, Moon, the Nodes, and the planets) are mapped onto the 64 gates of the Rave Mandala — the I Ching wheel fixed to the tropical zodiac — and to one of six lines within each gate. The 26 resulting activations define channels between gates; a fully-activated channel 'defines' the centres it connects. Which of the nine centres are defined determines the Type (Manifestor, Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, or Reflector), the inner Authority, and — from the two Suns' lines — the Profile (e.g. 1/3, 5/1).

Key terms

Type

One of five energy types — Manifestor, Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Reflector — determined by which centres are defined and how the motors connect to the Throat.

Authority

The body's inner decision-making mechanism (Emotional, Sacral, Splenic, Ego, Self-Projected, or Lunar), following a fixed hierarchy of defined centres.

Profile

The two lines of the Personality and Design Suns (e.g. 1/3, 5/1), describing the person's role and life theme.

Centre

One of nine energy hubs (Head, Ajna, Throat, G/Identity, Heart/Ego, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Spleen, Root). A centre is 'defined' when a channel into it is fully activated, or 'open' otherwise.

Incarnation Cross

The four gates of the Personality and Design Suns and Earths — the overarching life theme of the chart.
