Overview

The Huang Ji Jing Shi (皇極經世, 'the August Ultimate Ordering the Ages') is Shao Yong's grandest construction: all of history unrolled as a single nested clockwork of I-Ching hexagrams. A cosmic cycle — the 元 — spans 129,600 years; it divides into twelve 會 of 10,800 years, each 會 into thirty 運 of 360 years, each 運 into twelve 世 of 30 years — and at the bottom of the cascade, every single year receives its own governing hexagram, the 值年卦. This is the system behind the annual hexagram that Chinese metaphysics commentary still names every new year — 豐 for 2024, 革 for 2025, 同人 for 2026 — and behind the famous claim that we live in the 午會, the high noon of the cosmic day. askTIAN computes the full verified cascade: the 會 hexagram 大過, the 運 hexagram 姤 governing 1744–2103, the sixty-year 世卦, the ten-year 旬卦, and the year's own hexagram — each derived by the same elegant rule, and every rule locked to independently published anchors before a line of engine code was written.

Origin & history

Shao Yong (邵雍, 1011–1077) — the same Northern Song master through whom He Luo Li Shu is transmitted — built the Huang Ji Jing Shi on his 先天 (Before-Heaven) arrangement of the sixty-four hexagrams, the binary ordering that so struck Leibniz six centuries later. The system's mechanics are two interlocking ideas. The first is the line-change cascade: each level of time is governed by its parent's hexagram with one line changed — the 午會's 大過, with its top line changed, yields the 運 hexagram 姤 for 1744–2103; 姤's six lines, changed one by one, yield the six sixty-year 世卦 of that span — 乾, 遯, 訟, 巽, 鼎, 大過 — and the 鼎 of 1984–2043, its lines changed in turn, yields the ten-year decades. The second idea is the year-wheel: the four cardinal hexagrams 乾, 坤, 坎 and 離 stand outside time as the frame of the cosmos, and the remaining sixty hexagrams walk the Fu Xi circle in descending Before-Heaven order, one per year, closing a perfect sixty-year loop that turns forever alongside the sexagenary calendar.

For a millennium the Huang Ji Jing Shi has been the Chinese tradition's grand periodization of history — dynastic chronicles were mapped onto its 運 and 世, and its assertion that the present age sits in the 午會 under great transitional hexagrams remains a fixture of metaphysical commentary. The annual 值年卦 is its living remnant: every new year, essays across the Chinese-speaking world read the incoming year through its hexagram. Transmission, as everywhere in this catalogue, is imperfect — one circulating copy assigns the 1994–2003 decade to 蹇, which the line-change arithmetic flatly contradicts (the second line of 鼎 changed gives 旅) — and askTIAN records such contradictions rather than following them. The engine's rules were locked the loop's standard way: the cascade confirmed end-to-end against published spans (鼎 landing exactly on the published 1984–2043), and the year-wheel derived from four published years and then corroborated by two more found independently afterward — 既濟 for 2022 and 同人 for 2026 — six anchors in all, with 離 correctly skipped between 豐 and 革 exactly where the circle demands it.

How it works

For any year, the engine walks the year-wheel: sixty timekeeping hexagrams in descending 先天序 around the Fu Xi circle, anchored at 2014 = 屯, wrapping every sixty years — the four cardinals never govern a year. For years 1744–2103 it also returns the full cascade, each level derived by the line-change rule from the level above: the 午會's 大過; the 運 hexagram 姤 (大過's sixth line changed); the 世卦 for the year's sixty-year block (姤's first through sixth lines — 乾 for 1744–1803 down to 大過 for 2044–2103, with 鼎 governing 1984–2043); and the 旬卦 for the year's decade (the 世卦's lines changed in turn — 大有, 旅, 未濟, 蠱, 姤, 恒 across 鼎's six decades). Outside the corroborated 運 the cascade is refused rather than extrapolated — the year-wheel, being cyclic and anchor-verified, is still returned for any year. Every hexagram comes with its King Wen number, Before-Heaven ordinal, trigrams and lines, via the same hexagram helpers behind the I-Ching and He Luo Li Shu endpoints. Years carry their Gregorian labels as the published tables do, with the ganzhi-boundary caveat stated in the method string.

Published tables label years by Gregorian number, but the year strictly turns with the ganzhi year — a caveat every response carries for events near the New Year.

The rules were locked before implementation: the line-change cascade confirmed end-to-end against published spans, and the year-wheel derived from four published anchors and corroborated by two more found independently (six in all, 2014 屯 through 2026 同人, with 離 correctly skipped where the circle demands). Outside the corroborated 運 the cascade is refused rather than extrapolated; a circulating copy's arithmetic error for 1994–2003 is recorded, not followed. Pure deterministic compute on the shared hexagram engine, no LLM.
