Life Blueprint (稱骨算命)
Ancient Chinese Bone-Weight Destiny Calculation
Overview
Life Blueprint (稱骨算命, literally 'weighing the bones to calculate destiny') is a classical Chinese life-reading system attributed to the Tang Dynasty poet and astrologer Yuan Tiangang (袁天罡). Each of the four birth pillars — year, month, day, and hour — is assigned a bone-weight value in the traditional liang-qian system. The total weight maps to one of dozens of destiny tiers, each accompanied by a classical poem and detailed guidance on wealth, career, marriage, and longevity.
Origin & history
The system is attributed to Yuan Tiangang (袁天罡), a celebrated Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE) astrologer and physiognomist who served at the imperial court of Emperor Taizong. Yuan is also credited with predicting the rise of Empress Wu Zetian. The bone-weight tables he compiled became one of the most widely consulted destiny-reading tools in Chinese folk culture.
Bone-weight calculation spread from the Tang imperial court into popular culture during the Song Dynasty, when woodblock printing made almanacs and destiny manuals widely available. By the Ming and Qing dynasties, 稱骨算命 tables were standard inclusions in household almanacs across China. The system survived the 20th century's upheavals and remains popular in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Southeast Asian Chinese communities.
How it works
The birth year, month, day, and hour are each assigned a weight value in liang (兩) and qian (錢) according to fixed tables derived from the traditional Chinese calendar. The four weights are summed to produce a total bone weight. This total is looked up in Yuan Tiangang's destiny table, which assigns a life tier (e.g. 中上之命, Middle-Upper Destiny), a classical poem, and detailed guidance on wealth pattern, marriage timing, health, and lifespan.
